Bob Dylan: Our Defiant Prophet

  • B'nai Israel Synagogue 1829 North 9th Avenue Pensacola, FL, 32503 United States (map)

The mythic Bob Dylan is unquestionably the MOST important songwriter of the second half of the 20th Century. As a great synthesist, Dylan absorbed the wellspring of world history, art and western religious traditions, pulling from the past and building something new. In addition, he spouts deep wisdom, and a castigation of immorality - both of which stem from his Jewish roots. Truly despite himself, he performs the role of navi, prophet, who is a truth teller, or literally a "proclaimer". In this live music "edutainment," program, we will explore how Dylan, though very resistant to the title, is very much in line with the Jewish prophetic tradition. And we will find out how many ears we must have in order to hear his cry.
